Term 4 Newsletter

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back to the last term of the year. This is always a very busy term so it pays to check the school newsletter each week to keep tabs of what is going on.

We are starting the term with a combined study with Room 1. The Caritas Social Justice unit on Migration and Refugees will be our focus. We will be looking at our own migration story. Please do your best to fill out the Family Tree sheet when it comes home. and return it to school.

Alongside this unit we will integrate The Saints strand where we will be learning about the Communion of Saints. This refers to the People of God: pilgrim people of God living in the here and now; people of god who have died and are with God; people of God who have died are in the process of purification. We will also be identifying inspiring people who we know.

Our curriculum focus this term is Technology and our writing genre is how to write Instructions. Mrs. Correria ( who will be teaching Room 2 again every Thursday afternoon this term) and myself will both be teaching this. Kiwi Sport will continue and Mrs. Bruorton and Mrs Correria will be teaching athletic skills.

Our Arts focus this term will be dance..

In Show Week we hope to visit the A&P Show, weather permitting. You have already received a notice about this. Thank you to those who have responded so promptly. If you are able to help on one of the days or both, please let us know as soon as you can. This visit is always one of the highlights in our year.

Room 1 and 2 will also be staging a Nativity play at the end of the term. The date for this will be in Week 2’s newsletter. This is another highlight of the year. We are always so grateful for the wonderful job parents make of outfitting their child for this performance. More info to come on this.

Interviews with Parishioners

We were surprised to learn that Mrs Doherty has 6 different jobs in the parish. Her 2 favourite jobs is working at the Seafarers Association and being a Eucharistic Minister.

Joyce and Jane do lots of things in the Parish to help. Joyce sets up the alter for mass on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night. She also organises the Friendly Afternoon every month.

We went over to the Parish Office to meet Jean. She is the Parish secretary. She has a very busy job.

Term 2 Newsletter

Room 2 Newsletter   Term 2 2016
Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back to the second term of the year. What a bonus that the great weather is continuing.

This term our overall theme is Looking at our school in the early days and what it was like then for students and teachers. You may already be getting questions about what school was like when you were a child.

As part of this study we will visit Ferrymead on the 25th May. We have been lucky enough to secure a donation from Ferrymead Rotary so the cost for this trip is only $5. This will provide us with lots of opportunities for writing. The main genre this term will be report writing.

In our Education in Faith programme we will be learning about ways that the Holy Spirit works in us and talking about Pentecost. Then we will move on to the Church strand. As part of this we will explore what church was like in the past. We will also be looking at the structure of the mass and learning about the Liturgy of the Word. Near the end of the term we will be part of a class/parish mass. More on this later.

Physical Ed will be a combination of dance, gymnastics and winter ball skills. The main Arts subject will be music.
The students really enjoy the Kiwi Can programme on a Friday with Nicky and Sophie and that will continue.

We are back in the classroom at 2.30. If you are already at school to pick up your child, you are most welcome to come in and talk to your child about her/his learning. There is always something to share. Please follow our blog too. www.blogspot102.co.nz

I am always contactable by email (marian@stannes.co.nz) if you are unable to come into school.

Thanks for all your support.

Newsletter

Room 2 Newsletter Term 1 2016

Dear Parents,

It’s great to be back after the summer break. A big welcome to you all, especially the new students and their families.

This term we will be looking at the Woolston/Ferrymead area and discovering what it was like in the past, how we find it now and what we can do to ensure our local environment is in good condition for the future. The creek, river and estuary will be our main focus. We are planning a trip to the estuary later in the term.

We will also be supporting the Whaka Inaka programme by observing and discussing the data that the senior classes collect and learning what scientists are doing to improve the whitebait population. The hay bales you may have seen on the riverbank is part of this programme.

We are excited about our visit to the Art Gallery and the Margaret Mahy Playground on Friday. In the meantime, we are enjoying reading Margaret Mahy books. She was a wonderful narrative writer and narrative writing is our genre focus this term.

Kiwi Sport resumes in Week 3 and we will have a swimming block before Easter.

Ash Wednesday is early again this year. You are all very welcome to join us at the Parish/school mass next Wednesday (10th) at 9.05 am. We have been talking about why we pray and the students have had some amazing responses to this.

After Ash Wednesday we will begin the Lenten Caritas programme. The country it focuses on this year is Cambodia and the many challenges that country and its people face. This year is The Jubilee Year of Mercy so themes from this will run through our class programme and will help us understand what “living our faith through actions” (our new school motto) means.

Our Arts focus for this term is visual art. We will be exploring line and colour.

You will be able to keep up with all the action in Room 2 through our blog (www.stannes102.blogspot.co.nz). We welcome comments. I am also happy to be emailed (marian@stannes.co.nz) if that is a convenient way of communicating with me. Feel free to send photos of anything special you child would like to share with us.

Finally, you are always welcome to visit the classroom before or after school. Come and look at your child’s learning book or read the latest story.

Thank you for all your support.
